Boxing is renowned for it’s incredible stories. But few are more tragic than that of Bobby Chacon. A small guy from the barrios of California. At 5’5 he never considered himself to be a prizefighter – he thought such opportunity was only reserved for the bigger guys. His local liquor store attendant can still recall seeing him knock guys out in the car park and when his childhood sweetheart urged him to put his aggression into something beneficial and he soon became a star under the bright lights of the ring. In the last few years, we’ve witnessed the emergence of a handful of Cuban fighters with incredible potential who are making big steps to the top-spots in their respective divisions. In particular: Lara, Gamboa, Rigondeaux and heavyweight Mike Perez. However, there was one guy who did it all before it was cool. Joel Casamayor Johnson. There was something charming about Casamayor, typically before the fight he liked to be animated and get under his opponent’s skin. When he fought, he stuck to his great boxing abilities but he was equally prepared to fight like an infuriated drunk.

No year in boxing is ever perfect. Wherever there’s triumph, tragedy is certain to follow. Whether its a causality or a bad scorecard, there’s always something to sour the good mood.
Regardless, 2013 was a fantastic year. We had some amazing emerging fighters promising much for the future of the sport. A lot of names were made in the past 12 months, but there were a plethora of outstanding performances of both skill and will from established names to the almost anonymous, its a great time to be a boxing fan. At the end of the year all a boxing fan ever wants is a simple answer to the question ‘what’s next?’ From a sport that demands so much from its competitors, it never quite seems enough to its spectators. The last year has been as much about the battles outside of the ring as it has about those inside it; with two promotional companies in a stalemate and major networks evening the playing field, the year has been a turning point for the growth of the sport.
